A love letter to Zikoko.

Image
On days we thought things couldn't get any worse the universe managed to prove us wrong, our ever friendly global pandemic, Mr Corona virus decided to have a mental breakdown and like a toxic yoruba man that he is, he decided to hurt as much people as he could, after the hot period and the hope of Nigerians began to grow, earth decided to throw sand on our faces, we had several rape cases, the end sars protest, and the Lekki toll-gate deaths (RIP) even the ocean caught fire. People lost their jobs and those who didn't spent their work hours applying for new jobs.  After all these tragic events, do people still know what happiness feels like? Can people still laugh? Do people feel peace and warmth? The answer is yes. But out of 7 billion people in the world only eighty three thousand people know what happiness truly feels like, and these are the eighty three thousand people who follow Zikokomag. Here's why you should vote for zikoko writers as the nex...

Angry black woman.

(Bianca Xunise) This is history, a story, a tale we should tell our children; it's time we stop hiding like we are some horrible scar and embrace our history because it is a story as old as time.  My self-defence was seen as aggression and treated as transgressions. I was raised not to retaliate, not to speak back because my skin colour did the talking, and what it had to say wasn't pleasant. What was Rachel wearing they asked? Where was she? Why was she out so late? She probably even liked it, they said. She had been judged and prosecuted for the sins of others and her story washed away like so many others.  “Do it for the kids, they said”, “Stoop to conquer, they exclaimed”. As she slept in bed with her oppressor. Her scars faded without healing and her story washed away. Every action taken in our lives is a gift to someone else. We are told self love is important, but we aren't meant to love ourselves too much. No that's not for us. As a black woman lovin...

I took a moment to PEN this down.

Image
After listening to Nifa’s improv podcast episode I texted her and asked if she would like to have a little interview session with me and she agreed, she’s a delightful and beautiful soul and if she was a literal pen I would never lose her and I promise you I lose all my pens. Jennifer Sanni, or as you know her as,  Nifa the Pen is an On Air Personality who owns the podcast Vibes and Nifa, her podcast is less than a year old and has grown beyond her expectations. I had the pleasure of knowing Nifa a little bit better to understand the story behind her growth.  What was your childhood like? We moved alot, I attended over 13 schools. I currently reside in Abuja, that’s where I school now but, I spent the first 9 years of my life in Lagos and I attended like 3 schools in Lagos because we constantly changed locations, when we moved to Abuja we still changed locations alot, it was because of my dad’s job but, I didn’t really have friends, I had my siblings b...

The first time I watched Dumebi video I loved it, I didn't really use social media then, I wanted to be a doctor so life was just vibes and books, so I didn't even know who the director was.  Dumebi received a lot of backlash and pople called it confusing and childish, some said it made no sense but, I liked it, it was different, it wasn't like one of those regular videos where the director basically acts out the lyrics of the song and calls it "Film-making" It was coined out of a different perspective and although it seemed like the video had nothing to do with the song, it had everything to do with the sound. The crazy director who shot that video is  ADEMOLA FALOMO   DUMEBI–REMA During my search on the Internet I found out, Ademola Falomo is a Nigerian and Dubai Based Filmmaker. He has Created series of Branded Contents, Music Videos and Documentaries, he has a unique style of Portraying the youth culture with every project he embarks o...

MY INDEFINITE PAIRS–The boys in the band.

Image
" Show me a happy homosexual and I'll show you a gay corpse"  This film was absolutely lovely, depicted art, love, drama and homosexuality, it gave insight into what could go on in a queer man's mind and the battle they fought in themselves, I think it wasn't to be watched as a collective, but individually, each viewer was not expected to watch it as whole, but the focus was on two characters at a time, each character had an indefinite pair, they related to none but one and all.  My pair is Harold and Michael.  I cannot decide who my favorite character is between, Harold and Micheal, they were alike and yet different, they were a match and yet they weren't. I saw Harold as one who hated himself, and accepted that he did, he loved art and he understood that the greatest lie one could tell was the one told to oneself, he was paranoid and constantly bothered about physical appearance, but unlike most people he didn't lie ab...

This is a cry for help.

Do you ever just get tired of living? Things become so hard you wish everything could stop and you could just take a break from existing, the constant late nights and your horrible sleep schedule, you scroll through the internet with no zeal to reply messages and even the memes that made you laugh no longer help, I know how it feels, it's Sapa that wants to kill you. It's killing me too and if you don't send me money I'll drink Pepsi and die, if you also choose to ignore this message, you're anti black. 2177444980 Zenith bank.

" We are all mad" You're mad, she is mad, he is mad, your ex is mad, Buharee is mad, your landlord is mad, they are mad, everybody is mad.  Humans have the constant need to give things a bigger meaning, we want to be so conscious of our humanity that we try to explain everything, in order to convince ourselves that we are better than other species and that's exactly why somebody woke up and decided to group names, animals, places and things into one category, and, another decided that he wanted to extend the group and added "ideas". Often times I wonder what if these words and things never existed, what if one human didn't want to be remembered so bad and had just sat in his house sipping tea and had left everybody to their business, what if the word happiness didn't exist? What if the word sadness didn't exist? What if money didn't exist? What if all the things that people term as success didn't exist? And, what if success di...

My love song- Someone to stay by Vancouver Sleep clinic

Image
"I'm feeling something, I don't know what i'm feeling but i'm feeling something and that feeling is beautiful, it feels like the sound of a baby's laughter, it feels like i'm being told I look beautiful while i'm crying, it feels like getting a good review for my work, if feels like getting my dream job, if feels like what I would feel if I got to meet my idol, I don't know what feeling this is, but I love it and I want to feel it again, so i'll put the song on repeat." I guess this is more of a reaction than a review cause this is my first listen and i'm here crying but I want to capture this emotion, this feeling, I want to pencil it down so I can remember how beautiful this song was the first time i heard it. The chords, the drums, the way his voice was in perfect symphony with the rhythm, the perfect sync, the ad-libs, the background orchestra, maybe this is love. I would say this song has no flaw, but if this is really ...

"There are a lot of evil people in this world, people like that usher that likes seizing phone–nonsense woman–your math teacher that said if you don't know calcus you'll never get into uni–shey you've entered school and she's still teaching that mumu subject, nonsense! That evil woman that tried to make you right handed when you were left handed, the people selling fanta 150, that woman that told me to take "two money" and collected my big money (Thunder will fire this one), Desmond Elliot and that mumu Elon Mustapha that is using your binance to play, shey if you too you're not a mumu you'll use the money and buy Amala from mummy Taofeek and you'll know that you enjoyed yourself, eh eh as i was saying, people are evil in this world o but nobody beats those monsters that text you "We need to talk" This sentence was made by the devil himself, shey izz this sentence that they use and break my heart, God will still punish Fe...

Why you should run away from Nigeria

Image
Good roads we don't have, bad governance everywhere, poverty, climate, see ehn, Nigeria is the only reason you're not fine. Nigeria has made it a plan to ruin my life but God is by my side, I cannot allow myself to be used. Everyday there's a new story, i'm switching on the TV hoping to finally get good news, but no! It's always the same story, but someone different, another Ngozi has been kidnapped, another Femi left for work but didn't come home, another lockdown, another fraud case, another rape incident, same story everyday. I got the idea for this piece this morning, i went outside to get airtime and on my way, i saw some men sitted at a shop were they sold local gin "hot" and they were having an argument on which they were going to get. I was surprised, wasn't it too early for "Men" to be drinking? I can't even blame Nigeria again i blame Nigerians. As at 2018 the population in Nigeria was 195.9 million and the worki...

The necessity of a margin.

When i was younger i wanted to learn a lot, a whole lot, i wanted to try alot too. I had it written in my diary, it was a section that said " What i want to be when i grow up " i wanted to be a sketch artist, a popstar, a dancer, a writer, i wanted one of my silly romance novels to be a movie, at one certain point i wanted to code and design my own apps–most of these ideas had come from movies i had watched, the biggest impact happened at age 14, i read the all famous Ben Carson's book about his life story and i decided i wanted to be a neurosurgeon. This decision might just be my biggest mistake in life and the reason my plan to be a rich Lamborghini owner at 18 looks unrealistic. Let's look at this from this perspective, imagine someone had really paid attention and maybe aided me in my decision making and allowed me try out these things i said i wanted to be, but we are stuck in a regressive country where the value of a child is based on his or her grad...

Shouldn't her bio describe her?

Image
Art work by Amy. The fact that Miss Okoli's bio says "I'm funny on most times on YouTube" will always bother me. Nobody asked for my opinion but this is what i think. The concept of social media is to portray yourself as perfect but here's Amy doubting herself, okay maybe she's not doubting herself but basically stating what she thinks. But how can authencity come with the word most times? Rude right? To fully portray your life how it takes both courage and wisdom, authenticity got Amy where she is now and that's one quality everyone should potray. So the A in AMY stands for Authentic. A good book goes through lots of stages, the amount of papers tossed in the trash because the writer didn't like that piece, the sentences erased because it didn't fit, from the writer to the editor, to the proof-reader and other stages it has to face to become a new york best seller and i can say if Amy's life was a book i would buy it in hard copy s...
